Epsom Protection Society
Shaping the Future, Safeguarding the Past

The Epsom Protection Society is for all who care about their surroundings and wish to change them for the better whilst protecting the heritage.

The Epsom Protection Society was founded in 1959 at a time when many historic and architecturally valuable buildings and houses in Epsom and Ewell were being threatened by developers. Its primary role was to halt the destruction of the heritage and to ensure that new development was compatible with the traditional character of the town with its many trees. Today its purpose continues to be to protect the heritage and to encourage high standards of new planning and building; it is also concerned to promote civic pride and to inspire the progressive improvement in the quality of urban life for everyone.

The Society is registered with the Civic Trust and shares common aims with other civic societies.

We
  • · care about the surroundings- the places where people live and work and enjoy leisure
  • · want to find solutions to environmental problems
  • · wish to improve the fabric of the town for present and future generations
  • · help to safeguard the heritage and character of Epsom
  • · listen to the local community and campaign for their interests
  • · encourage high standards of planning, design and architecture in the built environment and open spaces
  • · promote a sense of civic pride

All planning applications are monitored. Site inspections may be needed and if we identify there are important issues or where problems are raised by those affected, representations are made to the Council and to national organisations like English Heritage. We act as a focal point for the local community wishing to safeguard their environment and reflect their concerns and aspirations. The Society has a reputation for expressing responsible views on planning and issues affecting trees. For example we had a major input over the years on the eventual adaptation of the Assembly Rooms, the historic Listed building previously used by a building society in the High street.

Trees are an important element in the urban landscape of Epsom. The Society aims to ensure that preserved trees are retained when development takes place. Tree planting projects have been carried out in the Borough; for example for our 25th anniversary £1000 was raised by members and 25 trees planted. We coordinate with the Council's Tree Officer on felling and surgery and make proposals for planting in open spaces and grass verges to retain Epsom's verdant character.

We are consulted and comment on conservation and major planning reviews by the Borough and the County councils and have access to a range of national bodies in the environmental field for advice and assistance.

We are a voluntary organisation with a constitution based on the Civic Trust model. The Executive committee meets monthly to handle the volume of business and to ensure a speedy response. Members receive four newsletters a year; they are invited to the AGM in spring and a social in autumn, to walkabouts in Epsom, to visits further afield and to public talks on relevant topics.

South East England, because of its proximity to Europe, is seen to be a natural place for future development. In Surrey the northern part, close to London, is under most pressure and Epsom is planned to accommodate many more houses. It will require vigilance and care to balance the needs against environmental impact. The Society aims to help find the best solution to these issues which are likely to be a continuing problem for the people of Epsom.

There are two major concerns: first there is the pressure for new development and where it should be located and second the continuing need to protect and improve what exists in the town and to raise the quality of life for all.

By becoming a member you will not only add weight to representations on local issues but also help to identify ways of improving the town. With our association with the Civic Trust you will be joining a powerful civic movement in England.

We believe it is important for local people to be actively involved in consideration of local environmental issues and we need your help and support in this task - please join us.
