Epsom Protection Society Shaping the Future, Safeguarding the Past | |
|
The Epsom Protection Society is for all who care about their surroundings and wish to change them for the better whilst protecting the heritage. The Epsom Protection Society was founded in 1959 at a time when many historic and architecturally valuable buildings and houses in Epsom and Ewell were being threatened by developers. Its primary role was to halt the destruction of the heritage and to ensure that new development was compatible with the traditional character of the town with its many trees. Today its purpose continues to be to protect the heritage and to encourage high standards of new planning and building; it is also concerned to promote civic pride and to inspire the progressive improvement in the quality of urban life for everyone. The Society is registered with the Civic Trust and shares common aims with other civic societies. We
Trees are an important element in the urban landscape of Epsom. The Society aims to ensure that preserved trees are retained when development takes place. Tree planting projects have been carried out in the Borough; for example for our 25th anniversary £1000 was raised by members and 25 trees planted. We coordinate with the Council's Tree Officer on felling and surgery and make proposals for planting in open spaces and grass verges to retain Epsom's verdant character. We are consulted and comment on conservation and major planning reviews by the Borough and the County councils and have access to a range of national bodies in the environmental field for advice and assistance. We are a voluntary organisation with a constitution based on the Civic Trust model. The Executive committee meets monthly to handle the volume of business and to ensure a speedy response. Members receive four newsletters a year; they are invited to the AGM in spring and a social in autumn, to walkabouts in Epsom, to visits further afield and to public talks on relevant topics.
There are two major concerns: first there is the pressure for new development and where it should be located and second the continuing need to protect and improve what exists in the town and to raise the quality of life for all. By becoming a member you will not only add weight to representations on local issues but also help to identify ways of improving the town. With our association with the Civic Trust you will be joining a powerful civic movement in England. We believe it is important for local people to be actively involved in consideration of local environmental issues and we need your help and support in this task - please join us.
